Hooked on Herbs

What a lovely afternoon we had spending time with some very knowledgeable members of our community. Thank you to the Herb Society ladies who came along and shared their passion for all things herbs and thank you to the library leaders and their mums for supporting this afternoon.

We made bouquet garni and lavendar bags to take home and had lots of fun chatting over afternoon tea, of which most had a herb theme to it. Very delicious too.

  • Did you know that herbs are just as good for animals. We heard the story about the little dog with the sore nose that had calendula rubbed on it and within days it had cleared up. A few drops were also added to its drinking water each day.

  • Lavendar bags under your pillow help relieve stress headaches and tension and make for a good night's sleep

  • Using sprigs of rosemary under meat when roasting it adds to the flavour and baking potatoes with rosemary give them that extra something.

CHAD KOLCZE

CHAD KOLCZE at Wanaka Primary School

The double book launch by author Chad Kolcze at Wanaka Primary School on Friday September 2nd, 2 - 3 pm was FANTASTIC!

Firstly we had a skateboard jam at lunchtime with a dozen students and several parents taking part. Chad is an awesome skateboarder. Students and teachers watched from the grassed bank as the action took place in the bottom carpark.

Then it was on to the new hall to hear Chad talk about publishing his books. He was entertaining, but taught us a lot.

His new series of Action Kids Books combining action sports that kids like (skateboarding / surfing / snowboarding) and very cute mouse characters should do very well.

They are available from Wanaka PaperPlus.

2010 NEW BOOK REVIEWS

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them by J.K. Rowling
A short review by Alice Murphy
If you like Harry Potter and would like to learn about some of the creatures this book is for you. I really enjoyed this book and you might too.

Quidditch Through The Ages by J.K. Rowling
A short review by Alice Murphy
I think “Quidditch through the Ages” is a good book. This book would be good for people who like Harry Potter and also like Quidditch. I loved it.

The Tiger Rising by Kate DeCamillo
A short review by Jemima Bell
This book is about a boy called Rob who found a tiger, and also a girl for a friend. I like this book because it is about trust and trust is very important.

Autumn With Horses by Trudy Nicholson
A short review by Jemima Bell
This book is about all the girls who want to go in the national grand champion show because they want an award. I liked this book because my best friend loves horses.

The Dream Merchant by Isabel Hoving
A short review by St.Claire Marshall
This is a great book. It’s an adventure story, and there’s three main parts. It’s probably one of the best books I’ve ever read.

The Earthsea Quartet by Ursula LeGuin
A short review by Nicholas Smith
The Earthsea Quartet is wicked! It’s all about witchcraft, old tombs, magic and an adventurous young boy. The rest you can figure out!

Attack of the Prehistoric Pokemon
A short review by Nicholas Smith
Follow Ash and his friends back in the Jonto region. Ash wants to find a Pokemon fossil but Team Rocket wants some too. See Pokemon evolution, extinct Pokemon, and see Misty’s new Pokemon at the end of the book.

Monstrosity by Janice Marriott
A short review by Hannah McNabb
This book is for people who like to prank. I didn’t like this book because it was only about one thing: brussell sprouts! The ONE thing I like about this book is the description of brussell sprouts, it is excellently described.

LEAPFROG

LEAPFROG poem
(Do you need to find something out in the library?
Then LEAPFROG till you get what you want. Keep jumping
to your goal, just like the frog looking for food.)

Lock in your goal today to succeed:
“What is it you want to know & achieve?”
Explain the plan to find it now –
jump straight to “How can we do it?” power.
Action your info, choosing right keywords:
if specific’s not right, then general’s good.
Plot your course via the main resource sections,
find non-fiction, reference, website, or person.
Format your info – skim, scan & summarise it –
evaluate the order so we understand it.
Read it out and assess, how best to present it?
Organise now a poster, play, speech, or booklet.
Go if you’re happy: “Did you get what you came for?”
but if not, Go back till you get what you aimed for.

Pip, our librarian (who likes frogs a lot!)

Term 4 Roundup

It’s the last term and we’ve got a new librarian. The library is looking a little different, but otherwise just as great as before! So come in and read a book, we have new ones and the old classics.
Emily, Hannah, Michaela and Tully are working towards their gold awards (for library leadership), while others are working towards their silver.
Tully

If you don’t know what to read or are stuck for a book come in to the library and look at the new section called HOT SPOT. Hopefully you will find a good book to read that you will enjoy.
Hannah

Our library is very colourful and full of decorations. There are lots of frogs to remind us to be like a frog when we are looking for information, and keep on hopping till we find what we came for. There’s even a LEAPFROG poem.
Emily

Come in at lunchtime on Monday or Wednesday and ask Pip to see the pop-up books. They're really cool! But not for borrowing.

All of us are doing our library awards and some are starting their gold awards. Lots of others have been presented with their first award, so keep up the great work library leaders. Our library wouldn't run as smoothly without you.
